The chemicals contained by many office products can have harmful consequences in both use and disposal. Products with reduced chemical content are better for human health, reduce pollution, and preserve our land, water, and air. Screening Criteria Non-Toxic and Low Toxicity products minimize negative impacts on living organisms when they are disposed of. Chlorine has traditionally been used in paper products to whiten pulp. Paper manufacturers now offer three chlorine conscious options: (1) Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) which eliminates the use of chlorine and its derivatives, (2) Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) which is equal to TCF except that trace amounts of chlorine from previously bleached recycled fiber may be found, and (3) Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) which is made using a less harmful derivative of chlorine, such as chlorine dioxide. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) contaminate soil and groundwater and are significant indoor and outdoor air pollutants. Products with No- or Low-VOCs benefit human health and the environmental. Natural Rubber products are made from renewable, non-toxic materials, replacing petroleum based products that can be toxic and are non-renewable. Soy Based Ink replaces petroleum based ink that can be toxic and is a non-renewable resource. Ozone Safe products address an environmental concern that has been successfully remediated through government, legal, and consumer action.
