What is it?
The Green Screen™ is a system of labeling and ranking products according to key
indicators of social and environmental sustainability. Screening results are
conveyed by icons displayed beneath the product description; specifics are
noted on the product detail page. Once labeled, products are ranked by
greenness within their respective categories. The goal is to promote designs
that are good for people and the planet.
How does it work?
TheGreenOffice.com relies on nonprofit, government, green business, and
academic experts to identify relevant screening criteria. We do not audit or
certify product attributes. Instead, we recognize over ten widely accepted
measures of sustainability (e.g. recycled content) and over fifteen third-party
certifications (e.g. Energy Star). Products are ranked by a simple and
practical rule: those with the most screening criteria come first. The ranking
system favors products with the highest post-consumer and total recycled
content. A handful of third-party certifications are given preference for
having exceptionally high standards (e.g. Green Seal).
Why offer conventional
products?
While our vision is to offer a full line of sustainably designed, high quality
office products, for most workplaces it is virtually impossible to avoid the
use of conventional solutions. Instead of forcing well intentioned consumers to
shop in two or more locations – itself a wasteful act – we offer a convenient
selection of “brown” necessities. By avoiding conventional products whenever
possible our customers assert to manufacturers that real demand exists for
positive change.
